What is an electric car?

An electric car is a car that utilizes electric motors and motor controllers instead of an internal combustion engine. Currently (in the majority of cases) electrical power is derived from battery packs carried onboard the vehicle.

Vehicles that make use of both electric motors and other types of engine are known as hybrid electric vehicles and are not considered pure electric vehicles because they operate in a charge-sustaining mode. Hybrid vehicles with batteries that can be charged externally from an external source are called plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Why an electric car?
'Going electric' is a way to demonstrate your commitment to your country and creating a cleaner planet. The use of electric cars will contribute to fresher cleaner air and also remove the need for reliance on oil which in tern will result in a safer planet for you and generations to come.
What is "2012 - New Beginning?
"2012 - New Beginning" is a branch of Northern Lights Energy , who's goal is to implement a system, with the name Plögg in Iceland to enable the Icelandic public to replace their cars with electric cars by 2012.
Why 2012?
To establish a time frame to motivate both individuals and groups within a project towards the goal. All over the world projects similar to 2012 are in progress. The question is not 'if' it is possible but 'when'.
What is a "Plögg"?
The Plögg is the software/hardware driven network of interactive operating systems implemented all over the country. Subscription gives the proud owner of an electric car the same safety and accessibility to power that any other car owner would expect.
What is a Subscription to the Plögg?

Subscription gives access to Charging and “Fast-charging-posts” all over the country. Subscription gives the proud owner of an electric car the same safety and accessibility to power as any other car owner.  Additional services that come with the subscription will be introduced in the near future.

We estimate this subscription will save the owner of a electric car 70 to 75% of energy cost compared to the standard combustion engine.

How much does the subscription to the "Plögg" cost?
We estimate savings of around 70 to 75% of standard energy costs compared to the regular combustion engine.
Is electricity a realistic choice for powering cars?

Yes.

Technological advances have made it a very realistic choice.

What is a Charging-post?
Interactive "plug-in" charging-posts for electric cars are being implemented all over the country for the convenience of the owners of electric cars.
What are Fast Charging-posts?
When the necessity for faster power arises the interactive "Fast-charging-posts" are set up to take care of that.
50 to 95% power can be achieved with 10 to 30 minutes of charging.
Is it easy to charge an electric car?

Yes.

Simply plug into a charging-post and your car will begin charging.

How long time does it take to charge an electric car?
It depends on the type of car and battery you are charging. Most electric cars take 3 to 4 hours from an empty battery to full, and with fast-charging 10-30 min. 50 to 95%
Are these batteries dangerous?
No.

There are several types of batteries used in electric cars. Most common are Lithium-ion or Lithium-Polymer batteries. (and coming soon to the market are the Lithium-Titanate). Detailed studies show that these batteries are safe to use and dispose of.
Is it environmentally safe to use batteries?
Yes.

The average battery lasts for up to 10 years. The pollution from batteries is only a fraction of the pollution caused by combustion engines. The U.S. government have decided to put major funding into the research and development of electric car batteries.
How long is the life-span of the batteries?
It depends on the type of the batteries and what it is used for, but normally around 5-10 years.
What kind of electric cars are available to buy?
Currently there are several types of electric cars from many car manufacturers. All the big car manufacturers are marketing or in the process of marketing electric cars. From 2009 to 2012 we estimate that over 70 new types will be marketed. See new cars here.
Are electric cars fast?

Yes.

Many electric cars come to mind, one in particular is the Tesla Motors Roadster. - 3.9 sec. to reach 100km/h. and all-together faster than is legal to drive in Iceland, so no-one will be in a slower car as a result of going electric.

Do electric cars make a lot of noise?
No.

There is almost no sound other than the whisper from the tires on the road. Some car manufacturer is offering Combustion engine sounds on cd to play in special cd- players, for those who enjoy the sound of the combustion engine. See here.
Do electric cars have the same safety features as other cars?

Yes.

Safety features of cars are mainly put together from the quality of the materials and construction of the frame an body-parts, lights, steering system, drive system, suspensions, break system, safety belts and airbags. None of these features are affected by the type of motor a car uses.

Are electric cars bad looking?
No.

In fact many of them are very good looking. For examples..... Look here.
Are electric cars durable?

Yes.

Electric cars are very durable as much of the engine friction is reduced resulting in longer lasting engines. Aside from being environmentally friendly with your automobile, you are going to derive a lot of efficiency from your car. You will be able to travel more miles and get a more efficient use of energy.

What kind of engine does an electric car have?

Technically, electric cars don’t have engines; they have motors. As much as we hear motor and engine used interchangeably, they are not the same. For example, engines are under the hood of just about every car on the road. They use a fuel, like gasoline or diesel, that combusts to perform work. Motors are used in electric cars, power drills, R/C cars, etc., and use electrical energy (supplied by a battery) to perform work.

There are multiple types of electric motors.

Are there many electric car manufacturers?

Yes.

Most of the main car manufacturers are introducing new types of electric cars this year 2009 and next year 2010. And hopefully every year from now on.

Are there cars that are powered only by electricity?

Yes.

There are also electric cars that use an electric motor and an internal combustion engine so that they can power the vehicle individually or together. These are called hybrids. An addition to the hybrid market is the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). The PHEV usually consists of a gasoline-electric hybrid with increased energy storage capacity (usually Li-ion batteries). It may be connected to mains electricity supply at the end of the journey to avoid charging using the on-board internal combustion engine.

Is the same power in beginning of an electric car’s journey and the end?
Yes.

The battery gives the same output power until it is almost empty.
What type of electric outlet do you need for charging the electric car?
It depends on the type of car and battery you are charging. Most electric cars can be charged with the outlets available at peoples home and standard outlets found elsewhere.
Is the electric bill going to be charged as a day-rate or a night-rate?
Subscribe to the Plögg and charge your car 24/7 at the same rate.
What is CO2?
A molecule of carbon dioxide (CO2) consists of one carbon and two oxygen atoms. Colorless and odorless, it is hard to detect. Compared to improvements in reducing the emissions of toxic pollutants, there has been less progress with reducing CO2 from cars. In total humans emit around 32 gigatons of carbon dioxide each year. Half of this stays in the atmosphere; the rest is absorbed by oceans and vegetation. With sharp increases in man-made CO2 emissions, the natural CO2 cycle gets thrown out of balance. Vegetation can no longer transform the increased amount of CO2 into oxygen, and oceans are steadily reaching saturation level. The increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere results in an enhanced greenhouse effect and subsequently climate change. While CO2 is only responsible for 20 percent of the natural greenhouse effect, it accounts for about 60 percent of the anthropogenic greenhouse effect that is causing the latest wave of global warming.
What is Ozone layer?
The Ozone is a form of molecular oxygen that consists of three oxygen atoms linked together. Ozone in the upper atmosphere (The "ozone layer") occurs naturally and protects life on earth by filtering out ultraviolet radiation from the sun. But ozone at ground level is a noxious pollutant. It is the major component of smog and presents this country's most intractable urban air quality problem.
Why Aren't Ozone Levels Dropping?
Ozone levels in many cities have been reduced as a result of the introduction of lower volatility gasoline and due to newer cars built with improved emission control systems replacing older models. But although there has been significant progress since 1970 in reducing emissions per mile travelled, the numbers of cars on the road - and the miles they travel have almost doubled in the same time.
A second reason the ozone level remains high is because emission control systems do not always perform as designed over the full lifespan of the vehicle. Routine aging and deterioration, poor state of tune, and emission control tampering can all increase vehicle emissions. A major portion of ozone-forming hydrocarbons can be attributed to a relatively small number of "super-dirty" cars whose emission control systems are not working properly.
Is pollution a problem in the world?
For decades environmental activists and governments have expressed grave concern about the pollution of the earth. Many policies and programs have been put in place to curb this situation. Of all pollutants, the carbon dioxide that emanates from cars is considered to be the worst.
